Hand Coloured Etchings

I was introduced to etching as a student quite a few years ago and was fascinated by the process.  Some time later, thrilled to have my own press, I published my own imited editions.

Etchings are original works of art which are made directly by the artist's own hands,

using techniques which date from the 16th century.

A copper plate is prepared with an acid resistant coating of wax and the image is drawn through the wax with a needle.  The plate is then immersed in an acid solution and the exposed line is bitten, the depth of the etched line is determined by the length of time the plate  is immersed in the acid.  When the plate has been cleaned, ink is worked into the bitten line and the surface of the plate is carefully hand wiped, leaving ink retained in the etched lines.

A printed impression is made by placing damp paper over the plate, which is passed through a copper-plate press under great pressure.  The soft paper is forced into the ink-filled "intaglio" lines and when pulled from the plate, the paper retains an exact mirror image of that on the plate.  The inking, wiping and pressing have to be repeated for every print that is made.

When dry, each print is coloured by hand using watercolours.

Hand-Coloured Etchings
